Germany – Teatro Gioco Vita at the Schwäbisch Gmünd International Shadow Theatre Festival
The International Shadow Theatre Festival of Schwäbisch Gmünd, founded in 1989 by Rainer Reusch, is the oldest and the only one in the world specifically dedicated to contemporary shadow theatre. It takes place every three years and transforms the German city into the "capital of shadow theatre": for a week, artists from all over the world show the fascinating technical and artistic possibilities that this ancient art can offer. The 2024 edition –the thirteenth– takes place from October 11 to 17, with a programme that, as usual, proposes shows for adults and children and opportunities for meeting and exchange between artists, professionals, and the audience.
Teatro Gioco Vita presents Cassandra, shadow theatre performance for two actresses created by Enrica Carini (text) and Fabrizio Montecchi (direction and set design), with design and puppets by Nicoletta Garioni.
The Cassandra by Teatro Gioco Vita re-emerges from the folds of the myth and becomes our contemporary to tell us that we can’t wait any longer: the world around us is collapsing under the weight of the many environmental disasters the human species is responsible for. She is a teenage Cassandra who, like all teenagers, experiences conflict in her relationships with her family and the adults around her, and to whom she does not give up saying what they don't want to see: the world is inexorably shifting towards destruction, and Cassandra cannot bear to witness the devastating process of extinction that is taking place without giving her own ‘testimony’.
For Teatro Gioco Vita, it is a return to the Schwäbisch Gmünd Festival, where the company successfully staged the shows The Nonexistent Knight, in 2015, and Moun, in 2022.
Cassandra is on stage at the Congress-Centrum Stadtgarten on October 13 (8 pm).
