Teatro delle Albe's project on Dante in the United States
The journey 'in the five continents' of the project conceived by Teatro delle Albe for the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of Dante's death is going on.
After Argentina, Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari will be in the United States from January 16 to 29, with the performance fedeli d'Amore (Love's faithful) and other projects created to "give voice" to the poet and make us experience the universality of his narration.
The first stop is in Philadelphia, where the show will debut at the Prince Theatre, the prestigious theatre of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (Penn Live Arts) of the the University of Pennsylvania (January 20-21).
Martinelli and Montanari will also be guests of the University's Centre for Italian Studies for a series of lectures and seminars on Dante and on the company's poetics, as well as for a public meeting at the Annenberg Center (January 19, 5pm).
The New York premiere will follow on January 26-27-28 at the La MaMa Theatre, on the occasion of which various other "Dantesque" appointments have been organized throughout the week.
fedeli d'Amore - polyptych in seven panels for Dante Alighieri”, written by Marco Martinelli and devised and directed together with Ermanna Montanari, is a further piece of the dramaturgical, vocal, musical, and visual research on Dante and the Divine Comedy the two artists from Ravenna have been carrying out for years.
Ermanna Montanari’s “different voices” (awarded Ubu Prize as best actress for this performance) speak to us in the single panels, and speak of the refugee, of the poet fled from his own city that has condemned him to burning at the stake and now on his deathbed, exiled in Ravenna. Those voices are suspended between the fourteenth century and our own day, Love is evoked as a force that frees humanity from violence, and Martinelli’s writing holds together political and metaphysical “reality”, the chronicle and spirituality.
Marco Martinelli’s new stage poem “around Dante and our present time” has been selected by Italian and American Playwright Project curated by Valeria Orani and Frank Hentschker, and published by PAJ (Performing Arts Journal) Publications directed by Bonnie Marranca.
The text will be the central point of the event organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in New York and Valeria Orani: screening of Martinelli’s short film Ulisses XXVI and panel discussion Fedeli d'Amore with Ermanna Montanari, Marco Martinelli, Bonnie Marranca, Frank Hentscker (January 23, 6pm).
Another art film by Martinelli will be screened at the Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò NYU: The Sky over Kibera, documentary that portrays how the Divine Comedy was “brought to life” in the immense slum in Nairobi, where Martinelli worked with 150 children and adolescents reinventing Dante’s masterpiece in English and Swahili (January 24, 6pm).
The screening is followed by a Q&A with the director, moderated by Stefano Albertini, NYU.
The La MaMa Theatre will also host the open workshop “I FOUND MYSELF from the Dark Wood to Paradise”, directed by Marco Martinelli (January 25-29).
He will work with participants on the first two cantos of the Inferno which describe Dante lost in the woods, his anguish, and his courage to wield a poetry of hope to overcome that fear. The « choral action », final outcome of the workshop, will be open to the public (January 29, 4:30pm).
The project fedeli d'Amore - a polyptych in seven panels for Dante Alighieri is presented in the United States with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, ATER Fondazione, Emilia-Romagna Region, University of Pennsylvania, Teatro delle Albe/Ravenna Teatro; in co-operation with the Consulates General of Italy in Philadelphia and New York, Com.It.Es, Italian and American Playwrights Project, and Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò New York University.
