Germany – A journey through the Lower Modena region with the photographs by Valeria Sacchetti
On June 16, opening of the photographic exhibition by Valeria Sacchetti Journey to the Lowlands - A journey through the 'Lower Modena region' in Stuttgart.
The "Lowland" (“la Bassa”, in Italian) is a flat and uniform, and almost boring territory in northern Emilia-Romagna, enclosed between the Apennines and crossed by the Po River and its tributaries, where days and seasons seem to alternate in the incessant rhythm of nature between fog, winter frosts and scorching summer heat.
It is a fertile and rich land, characterized by agriculture and small family-run industry, but in 2012 it was hit hard by the earthquake, that left behind a series of wounds not yet fully healed both in society, in the economy and in the landscape.
Immediately after this event, Valeria Sacchetti travelled with her camera to tell the story of those people and places, which the earthquake radically changed.
Valeria Sacchetti was born in Modena, and after graduating (in History, at the University of Bologna) and two masters in photography, she travelled to various countries, carrying out photo reportages for newspapers and magazines. During the last years, she has been turning her research to Italy, and in particular to her native land, Emilia-Romagna. The photographer worked on the project on the lower Modena area from 2012 to 2020, and this work received various awards and recognitions in Italy and abroad.
The exhibition in Stuttgart is now presented by the Italian Cultural Institute, which organized it in co-operation with AERS - Associazione Emilia-Romagna in Stuttgart. It will be opened until September 15 in the spaces of the Institute.
