The Teatro Regio di Parma for OperaStreaming
Il libro della giungla, the opera by Giovanni Sollima with a libretto by Pier Francesco Maestrini, based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, is streamed live on operastreaming.com on Saturday, 3 December 2022, at 6:00 pm CET, and will remain available free of charge on the platform for six months.
New commission from the Teatro Regio di Parma for “RegioYoung” – operas dedicated to children and teenagers from 6 years old that the Teatro Regio commissions every year from internationally renowned directors, composers and creative teams –, Il libro della giungla is an Italian-German co-production that debuted in Kiel in October 2020, and which is now finally having its debut in Italy (it is scheduled in Parma from November 30 to December 4).
The show was born from the collaboration and creative understanding between librettist Pier Francesco Maestrini, who also signs the direction, and drawer and cartoonist Joshua Held, author of the cartoons animating the scenes. The costumes are by Luca Dall'Alpi, the lights by Simone Bovis.
Giulia Bolcato (Mowgli), Cecilia Bernini (Bagheera), Matteo Mollica (Shere-Khan/Gurilla), Roberto Maietta (Baloo), Luigi Morassi (Akela/Kaa), interpret the protagonists of Rudyard Kipling's stories, represented through puppets animated on stage by the singers themselves. On the podium Gianluca Martinenghi, conducting the Cupiditas Orchestra.
The performance on December 3rd includes the special participation of composer Giovanni Sollima on cello, who will perform an interlude in duo with Pier Francesco Maestrini, for the occasion on electric guitar.
The live streaming will be in Italian language, and the English subtitles will be available in the following weeks.
Il libro della giungla is one of the two operas the Teatro Regio di Parma proposes in the 2022-2023 programme of OperaStreaming, the virtual stage of Emilia-Romagna that allows opera lovers across the world to view outstanding performances for free from the “homeland of bel canto singing”.
The new OperaStreaming season was opened on October 14 just by the Teatro Regio di Parma with the live streaming of Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, produced for the Festival Verdi 2022 in the first, rare version performed in Venice in 1857. It continued with Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly from the Teatro Comunale di Modena (October 30), and Georges Bizet’s Carmen from the Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia (November 27).
All these operas are still available on the platform, as they are scheduled for the next six months after the first date of broadcast.
After Il libro della giungla, the new appointments with the productions by Emilia-Romagna’s opera houses are on December 18 and 30: Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto from the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza and Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss from the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara.
