Ukraine – “Butterfly” by Artemis Danza
Artemis Danza/Monica Casadei’s new creation Butterfly - forbidden colours is a tribute to the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini.
The show is part of the company’s multi-annual project Corpi(n)azione_opera, which investigates and interprets the characters, the key-themes and the archetypes of opera according to a modern choreographic approach.
After having met irony (The Barber of Seville, 2008) and madness (Donizetti® into a rave, 2017), with Butterfly Monica Casadei goes back to a female vicissitude, both tragic and heroic, linked to the figures of Traviata, Tosca X, Carmen K.
Butterfly, ethereal and wounded at the same time, is the protagonist of a pièce enacting her inner drama, loneliness and hurt emotions, that talks about a long wait and its tragic and unavoidable end.
The feelings of sweetness and courage pervade the performance, the choreography is fast and impetuous and recalls a flow of consciousness and the impulsive reaction to events.
The stage space is split between an aerial dancer -Butterfly -suspended in an abstract and pure space-time, and a stage below animated by twelve dancers who represent Butterfly’s bowels, her deep sorrow, her courage, ‘till the decision to end her life.
The performance is on stage in Mariupol within the international festival [STARTUP] GogolFest thanks to the support by Italian Cultural Institute in Kyjiv, Italian Embassy in Kyjiv, Emilia-Romagna Region Culture Dpt.
