Teatro Regio di Parma on OperaVision
Teatro Regio di Parma opened its Opera Season 2025 with Giuseppe Verdi’s Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc).
It is a new production by Teatro Regio di Parma that the Artistic Director Alessio Vlad chose to entrust to the award-winning director Emma Dante, “capable of always saying something new without ever betraying the dramaturgy”, and to Michele Gamba, “among the most interesting and multifaceted conductors of the new generation”.
Emma Dante’s direction investigates Joan's internal restlessness. “The Pucelle is 'different' from everyone – writes the director –, she has mystical visions, hears voices, dreams in a frenzied way. Maybe she is crazy, maybe she is a saint inspired by heaven, maybe she is a witch dominated by evil spirits, but she is certainly an exceptional woman. (…) Joan is a woman who courageously challenges social conventions to the point of sacrificing her life”.
Michele Gamba conducts the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and the Teatro Regio di Parma Chorus, trained by Martino Faggiani. Among the performers, Francesco Congiu, former student of the Teatro Regio di Parma ‘Verdi Academy’.
The new production was created in the laboratories and with the workers of the Teatro Regio di Parma.
The praise among critics was unanimous after the debut on January 24, both for the musical performance and for the staging: “convincing, and at times exciting”.
Giovanna d’Arco is now broadcast on OperaVision, the free streaming platform supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme. It is streamed on March 7 at 19h00 CET and will be available until September 7, 2025.
As usual, OperaVision offers in-depth contents, including an interview with director Emma Dante.
