Spain – Icarus vs Muzak at the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona
A new international co-operation for Icarus vs Muzak, the young ensemble founded by Icarus Ensemble. From March 30 to April 1st, they are at the Mercat de les Flors-Casa de la Dansa in Barcelona to perform Gold, a new ballet by Catalan choreographer and dancer Roberto Olivan on music by Riccardo Nova specifically composed for.
It is a co-production Icarus Ensemble/Ropa (Roberto Olivan Performing Arts) that involves Icarus vs Muzak’s young musicians performing live on stage, joined by Giorgio Genta on electric guitar, Marco Lazzaretti, Francesco Pedrazzini and Matteo Rovatti on percussion, Simone Copellini on sound direction.
Riccardo Nova says: "Of a text taken from the thirteenth book of Mahabharata, in which the Goddess of the river’s son recites a series of verses, only the rhythm of the words remains, marked by 4 musicians. The sound sculptures on stage will resonate on this rhythm, activating the peculiarities and colours of the four yuga’s metals. From the colour and the stories of gold, we gradually arrive, through the intermediate stages of silver and bronze, to the opaquer colour of iron. Each age expresses its own beauty but also the energy that destroys it in order to pass to the next stage".
The music has a strong electronic and percussive component deriving from the Carnatic rhythmics, characterizing element of Nova’s poetics.
Four performances are scheduled: the first for schools on March 30th, then from April 1st to 3rd in the Mercat de les Flors’ main dance season.
The project is supported by Emilia-Romagna Region, ATER Fondazione, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Barcelona.
