France – Aterballetto performs “Don Juan” in Cannes

Johan Inger's award-winning choreography at the Palais des Festivals on February 5

After the tours in France and Spain in January with the shows Golden Days and Dreamers #1, Aterballetto returns to France with Don Juan, the creation winner of the Danza&Danza 2020 award as "Best Production".

The new international stage is the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, where on February 5 the company will perform the choreography for sixteen dancers signed by choreographer and director Johan Inger and playwright Gregor Acuña-Pohl, to original music by Marc Álvarez.

It is a choreographic reinterpretation of the story of the seducer par excellence, between seduction and obsession, sin and redemption. Inger and Acuña-Pohl read twenty-five different texts inspired by him, and the performance features all the characters of the story. Underlining tones and emotions, the dance becomes a ‘magnifying glass’ for each of them, highlighting their emotional dimension and emphasizing Don Juan’s emotional and sentimental immaturity and profound loneliness.

“I chose to investigate the figure of Don Giovanni because I think it is a great challenge to deal with a myth, and perhaps even more with Don Giovanni due to his controversial personality – writes Johan Inger. –  Approaching such a complicated character makes me question male behaviour. I think it will be intriguing to try to meet him, not defend him but maybe explain him (…). In our Don Juan, you will not see a sinner falling into hell, but we will leave the interpretation open to the viewer".
