France – “Awakening” by Pippo Delbono

On February 6 and 7 at Le Manège in Maubeuge.

Pippo Delbono goes back to France and stages his last work Il risveglio/ Awakening in one of the theatres that are most fond of him: La Manège in Maubeuge.

After Vangelo, La gioia, Amore, Le Manège welcomes the artists “one of the major figures of contemporary theatre”, “one of those ‘complete’ artists, who put their heart and courage on stage”.

Awakening is rooted in a personal experience and then unfolds in a feeling of loss that concerns many. In this creation, there are no texts by the authors Pippo Delbono has loved, there are only his own words, his stories and poems. These words are about his own weaknesses, fears, hopes, because, to heal that "feeling of loss", to try to continue living, a gesture of solitary rebellion is needed, the acknowledgement of a fragility.

The artist tells us that «Life is to die and to be born again /To be born again and to die», and that «Now it’s time to be born again». On the poignant notes of cellist Giovanni Ricciardi, on stage with his instrument, and music pieces that hail from the memory of the ‘70s, Delbono repeats: “You must dance, dance in war”.

"Awakening is dedicated to all those who fell asleep and have then reawakened. And also to those who have yet to wake up", we read in Delbono's notes: an invitation to react, to respond, to overcome isolation and fear.

The show is on stage on February 6 and 7 (8 pm, at Atelier Renaissance). It is presented by Le Manège Maubeuge and is shared by Le Phénix, scène nationale Valenciennes in its programme.
