Teatro del Drago in Canada

180 years of marionettes and glove-puppets theatre told by the Monticelli Art Family. In Montréal, on March 8

Teatro del Drago/Famiglia d’Arte Monticelli was invited to the 17th Festival de Castelier, one of the most important puppetry festivals in Canada, - the only representatives of Italy with their International Festival of Puppets and Figures Arrivano dal Mare! (Arriving from the Sea) (taking place in Ravenna and Romagna on next May 21-29, 2022).

During the Festival de Castelier, from March 1st to 6, the artistic directors of Arrivano dal Mare! were busy with professional meetings and watching shows, films, exhibitions.
On March 7, after the Festival, Teatro del Drago was engaged in two Masterclasses, held at the theatre festival in Monteregie.

The commitments in Canada end on March 8, with a meeting at the Italian Cultural Institute in Montréal: Teatro del Drago & the Monticelli Art Family: 180 years of marionettes and glove-puppets theatre.

It is a meeting/conversation about the puppetry history in Italy, with an insight on the Monticelli Family, one of the oldest Italian puppet theatre companies, active in north-central Italy since 1840.

Through the Family’s history, two centuries of Italian wandering theatre companies are retraced, focusing on artistic production and the evolution of puppetry techniques.

The narration of a handed down and still alive “craft” includes –among other topics– Italian Commedia dell’Arte and Commedia Popolare, and the traditional masks related to them. The Monticelli Collection and the Museum ‘La casa delle Marionette’ in Ravenna are also introduced, as well as the transmission of knowledge activities Teatro del Drago carries out toward new generations.
