France – "Puccini’s Opera. Voci di donne" by Artemis Danza
The 8th Italian Week in Avignon “Bella Italia” is taking place from October 9 to 19. The event is organised by the City of Avignon in co-operation with the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Marseille, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce for France.
In the varied programme of the 2024 edition, a tribute to Giacomo Puccini could not be missing in the year of the centenary of his death, and the show Puccini’s Opera. Voci di donne – the latest creation by Monica Casadei and her company Artemis Danza, stands out among the cultural proposals.
The choreographer’s artistic project is dedicated to the most fascinating heroines of Puccini’s operas. The understanding of Puccini’s music starts from the analysis of his profound relationship with the female world, a clear message from the titles chosen for his most famous works: Tosca, Butterfly, Turandot, La Bohème. A kaleidoscope of different personalities, a universe full of facets and sensitivity.
In the portraits that make up Puccini's Opera. Voci di donne, we find Casadei's personal reading of the theme of the feminine, placed at the centre of a process of choreographic, visual, and musical reinterpretation. Tragic love, thwarted and opposed love, cruel love that annihilates, the lust for possession that leads to destruction, live in the faces, in the bodies, in the gestures of the dancers and never cease to make us reflect on the relevance of stories which have moved audiences all over the world.
The creation is permeated with a poignant atmosphere, full of tension and poetic suggestion. Puccini's orchestral score contrasts with the electronic tracks by composers Luca Vianini and Fabio Fiandrini who design an enveloping and apocalyptic sound space.
Puccini’s Opera. Voci di donne is presented by the Italian Cultural Institute in Marseille and will be on stage at the Théâtre du Chêne Noir on October 10 and 11 (7 pm).
