France – Fraternal Compagnia at the Festival OFF d’Avignon

Two shows scheduled: “Don Giovanni” (July 7-31) and “Not Adam in Mask” (July 12-26)

Fraternal Compagnia returns to the Festival OFF d’Avignon, where the company performed in 2019, and this time presents two shows: Don Giovanni, on stage from July 7 to 31 – the entire duration of the Festival, and Not Adam in Mask, scheduled on July 12, 19 and 26.

Don Giovanni, written and directed by Massimo Macchiavelli, is a completely renewed edition of a show the Company has already got in its Commedia dell’Arte repertoire: the Don Giovanni by Giovan Battista Andreini.

In the original play (written in 1651 and discovered in 2006), Andreini portrays the story of Don Giovanni on a mythological background: the Titans, in war against the Gods, turn to Don Giovanni – one who was born cursing the Gods – to bring chaos and ruin on earth. The language is a mix of comedy, tragedy, pastoral, and Commedia dell’Arte, whose jests and typical characters give great expressiveness to the play.

Macchiavelli’s adaptation exploits the infinite possibilities offered by the original text by assimilating new theatrical languages, such as shadow theatre and puppets. The adventures of the characters are accompanied by live music composed by Umberto Cavalli, performed with traditional instruments, such as the hurdy-gurdy, the accordion, the ocarinas, and the tambourines.
Don Giovanni is staged at the Theatre de l’Adresse from July 7 to 31, 04:45 pm.

Still at the Theatre de l’Adresse, on July 12, 19, and 26, 06:00 pm, the Company presents Not Adam in Mask, a new work curated by Alessandra Cortesi.

Born from some research projects on gender issues, and in particular on the role of women in theatre, the performance uses the universal language of Masks to tell the story of two women in an ordinary Italian village, of their strength in facing silent experiences and destinies already written and recognize themselves as protagonists of their own time despite the gender preconceptions imposed by society.

The tour is made with the support by Emilia-Romagna Region in collaboration with ATER Fondazione.
