The international debut of 'Saint Joan of the Stockyards' by ErosAntEros

In Ljubljana , November 10-11. In Luxembourg, November 15-16.

A classic of twentieth-century theatre staged in a contemporary key, with actors of different nationalities and languages – Italian, Slovenian, German, and English – and live music by the Slovenian cult band Laibach: ErosAntEros re-interprets Bertolt Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards underlining the relevance of the issues it covers.

General strikes, international conflicts, lack of rights and precariousness demonstrate that returning to Brecht’s work is still an important expedient for reflecting on today, on economy, capital, financial speculation, and exploitation of workers.

The original music and the characters of the "Black Straw Hats"– except Joan Dark, performed by Agata Tomšič – are given to historic collective Laibach, who performs live eleven musical pieces based on Brecht's texts.

The show is produced by Emilia Romagna Teatro ERT / Teatro Nazionale, Slovensko Mladinsko Gledališče in collaboration with Cankarjev Dom, TNL – Théâtre National du Luxembourg, Teatro Stabile di Bolzano, and ErosAntEros – POLIS Teatro Festival.

Saint Joan of the Stockyards debuted on April 18-21, 2024, at the Teatro Arena del Sole in Bologna, one of the theatres ERT manages, and now it is welcomed in the theatres of the co-producing partners. It will be on stage at the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana on November 10-11 (at 7:30 pm) and at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg on November 15-16 .

On occasion of the performnces in Ljubljana, where the show is also presented with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute, the Cankarjev Dom and Založba /*cf. publishing house, which published Brecht's play in the Slovenian translation by Mojca Kranjc, have organised an expert colloquium titled “In the Thicket of Capitalism – Saint Joan of the Stockyards Today” (November 11). The international symposium has been devised as a discursive event that complements, enhances and enables a wide range of reflections on, experiences of, and insights into Brecht’s play.
