Romania – 'Don Quixote' by Teatro dei Venti at the FITS - Sibiu International Theatre Festival
After the world premiere in Belgium, at the Theater aan Twater international festival in Boom, the Don Quixote by Teatro dei Venti is guest of another important and even more prestigious event: the FITS - Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
The new work by the Modena based theatre company is an itinerant show which uses the typical street theatre tools such as stilts, live music, theatrical machines, but which also takes into consideration the text, the element 'word', the poetic word. Teatro dei Venti reinterprets Don Quixote today to highlight the possibility of continuing to act in the world in a choral way. As director Stefano Tè explains, the choice fell on Cervantes' classic «because it is a novel perfectly in line with our research in this last period, related to utopias, related to human being, to his dreams and nightmares. Just as in Moby Dick, in Don Quixote there is another point of view, an upside down, another approach that is oriented towards the figure of Sancho, the witness, Don Quixote’s legacy, through Sancho, to all of us».
Sancho is the one who, although sceptical at the beginning of the story, will always remain at Don Quixote's side and will allow himself to be persuaded by his ideals and his nobility of spirit, picking up his spiritual legacy. What Don Quixote fights for, which is also reverberating in Sancho, is the possibility of not giving up, of not getting used to evil. With a touching final monologue addressed to the audience, he will invite the spectators not to give up and to believe that, united in the search for true justice, a change is possible.
The show is a Teatro dei Venti’s production in co-production with Solares Fondazione delle Arti - Teatro delle Briciole (Parma), with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Emilia-Romagna Region, and Caracò. The sketches of costumes and theatrical machines were created by F.M., inmate of the prison of Castelfranco Emilia (Modena), within the European project ‘AHOS All Hands on Stage’ – another focal point of Teatro dei Venti's work.
Don Quixote is on stage in Sibiu on June 29 at 7 pm and on June 30 at 7:30 pm (Pietonala Nicolae Bălcescu).
