OperaStreaming – Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea" directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi
Three hundred and eighty years after its first performance, Claudio Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea remains modern and engaging. Monteverdi and his librettist Gian Francesco Busenello present historical rather than mythological events for the first time in the history of musical theatre, and use a new language, very strong and sometimes daring, that brings real passion to the stage.
In fact, the passion between Poppea and the emperor Nero establishes the triumph of love meant as a visceral and irresistible force, a force before which virtue surrenders and duty pales.
L'incoronazione di Poppea opens the Teatro Alighieri di Ravenna Opera Season 2024, and on January 21 (3:30 pm CET) it will be live streamed on the YouTube channel of OperaStreaming, the portal of Emilia-Romagna opera houses.
The direction, sets, costumes, and lights are by the great maestro Pier Luigi Pizzi. “I designed a metaphysical set that has roots in Sebastiano Serlio’s classical scene of the Renaissance theatre, an emblematic square in which two worlds confront”, Pizzi explains, and also underlines how it is possible to find figures dealing with today's world and society in each of the characters.
Soprano Roberta Mameli performs Poppea, countertenor Federico Fiorio performs Nerone. Antonio Greco is the concertmaster and conductor of the Orchestra Monteverdi Festival - Cremona Antiqua.
The opera is a new production by Fondazione Teatro Amilcare Ponchielli in Cremona in co-production with OperaLombardia, Teatro Verdi in Pisa, and Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna. Italian newspaper «Il Sole 24 Ore» has defined it ‘best opera production’ of the year 2023.
An unmissable event, therefore, offered free of charge to the public all over the world by OperaStreaming, where opera enthusiasts can always find a very high-quality programming.
The other titles of the 2024 calendar will be soon introduced. Some of the operas of the 2023 season are still available on the platform: Fedora, from the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza (until May 8); Don Carlo, from the Teatro Comunale di Modena (until June 5); Il pipistrello, from the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (until June 24).
