Artemis Danza on tour in the United States with two shows

World premiere of 'Puccini’s Opera. Women Voices' in San Francisco. 'Violated Bodies#DjOperaNoir' on stage in Saint Paul, Chicago, Urbana. March 12-18

The new tour of Artemis Danza in the United States starts in San Francisco on March 12 and to the 18th it will include the cities of Saint Paul, Chicago, and Urbana.

The dance company will be on stage with two creations by Monica Casadei: Puccini’s Opera. Women Voices, that debuts as world premiere, and Violated Bodies#DjOperaNoir, two choreographies that take inspiration from women's stories, the stories of some heroines of opera and tragic stories of contemporary times.

The new artistic project Puccini’s Opera. Women Voices investigates and interprets in a contemporary key four fascinating heroines of the composer from Lucca: Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Mimì, and Turandot. In the four paintings that make up the performance, we find Casadei's personal take of the theme of the feminine, placed at the centre of a process of choreographic, visual, and musical reinterpretation. Tragic love, thwarted and opposed love, cruel love that annihilates, the lust for possession that leads to destruction live in the faces, in the bodies, in the gestures of the Company and never cease to make us reflect on the relevance of stories that have moved audiences all over the world.

In Violated Bodies#DjOperaNoir, Casadei continues the investigation of a theme very close to her heart: violence against women – an investigation which began several years ago with the transposition into dance of some famous feminicides from operas, not only Italian. After Tosca, Violetta (Traviata), and Carmen, and a multi-year collaboration with the Anti-Violence Centres of the D.I.Re Network, she addresses the topic again in consideration of the sad and disturbing reality of the increase in domestic violence and, in general, in suffering and abuse against all minorities. Starting from the stories of victims of rape and abuse and from an improvisational work with the dancers, Casadei has built a show oscillating between raw realism and poetry dictated by a possible redemption. Antithetical colours – on one side the brilliance and light of gold, on the other the enigmatic darkness of black – for a precious upholstery of an imaginary domestic hearth where respect and love should reign.

The world premiere of Puccini’s Opera. Women Voices is on March 12 at Club Fugazi in San Francisco (7 pm).

Violated Bodies#DjOperaNoir, is on stage on March 14 in Saint Paul (Park Square Theatre, 8 pm), on March 16 in Chicago (Athenaeum Theatre, 7:30 pm), on March 18 in Urbana (Lincoln Hall Theatre, 7 pm).

The tour is made with the support from the Italian Cultural Institutes in San Francisco and Chicago, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Italian Ministry of Culture, Emilia-Romagna Region and ATER Fondazione.
