Poland and Latvia – “Europa Suite”: A concert for Ukraine

In Krakow, Warsaw, Poznań, and Riga the solidarity project by Emilia Romagna Festival. March 6-11

The EUROPA SUITE musical project was born as a message of cultural closeness and solidarity with the Ukrainian people. On the tragic wave of the ongoing conflict, the composer from Ravenna Matteo Ramon Arevalos has created his Suite for voice, flute, violin, guitar, electronics, and piano, drawing inspiration from the mythological figure of Europa.

It is a contemporary composition inspired by dances of the Polish, Ukrainian and other neighbouring countries' folk traditions – countries that, also by culture, are linked to the current dramatic situation gripping all of Europe.
Also, its structure –four movements, preceded by a prologue– seems to evoke the concept of Europe as a common space of cultures and knowledge by following that common thread that unites the cosmogonies of all peoples: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire – the natural elements whose balance determined the life of the human species and the survival of the ordered universe arisen from chaos. The four elements are also found in the electronic and musique concrete compositions that act as a glue in some moments of the Suite.

The musical project is born in Emilia-Romagna and was conceived by Emilia Romagna Festival. The Italian premiere of Europa Suite will be in the summer of 2023 as part of the Festival programme.

Now it is presented in Krakow (March 6), Warsaw (March 7), Poznań (March 9), Riga (March 11), co-produced by the Italian Cultural Institutes of Warsaw and Krakow and the Italian Embassy in Riga as part of Italy's initiatives in support of the Ukrainian resistance to the aggression of the Russian Federation also in the cultural and artistic fields, and made possible thanks to the co-operation and support of ATER Fondazione and Emilia-Romagna Region.

The proceeds from the concerts will be donated to support Ukrainian refugees and exiles in Poland and to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
