Japan – Dewey Dell and Nicola Galli at the YPAM – Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting 2023
The 2023 edition of YPAM - Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting – one of the most important performing arts platforms in Asia – is underway in Japan (December 1-17).
In this edition, the YPAM dedicates a special focus to the new trends of Italian contemporary dance with the programme Italian Contemporary Dance Showcase, scheduled from December 14 to 17.
The project has been organized in collaboration with MarcheTeatro - Crossing the sea, in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo and with the support of the Performing Arts Department of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC).
Dance and performing arts group Dewey Dell and choreographer Nicola Galli are among the artists of this showcase that YPAM presents with the hope of opening ever new relations, co-operations and exchanges between the Asian area and Italy.
Dewey Dell performs I’ll do, I’ll do, I’ll do, a 2022 creation born from research around the concept of “ubiquitous body”: at once visible, present in the real world, and absent, as it is present in an invisible, non-real world. A source of inspiration was the reading of Carlo Ginzburg’s Storia notturna, that investigates cases of (alleged) witchcraft of people accused and interrogated by the Holy Inquisition. To Demetrio Castellucci's original music, the choreography weaves the threads of an imagined sabbath, an ecstatic journey of celestial ascension or infernal descent of the human soul out of the body.
The work by Nicola Galli is another exploration beyond “the boundary of what we know”: Il mondo altrove is a choreographic piece in the shape of a dance ritual which, according to a scenic mindset, celebrates the motion of an unexplored world, in which to decipher the "hieroglyphs" of an unknown civilization. The pièce traces an ideal path between West and Orient and is freely inspired by South America's indigenous rituals, Japanese's symbols and traditions of Noh theatre, and the composer Giacinto Scelsi's obsessive - to some extent mystical and eccentric - musical research, focused on a spherical concept of sound.
The performances will be presented on December 16 (7 pm) and December 17 (2 pm) at the KAAT - Kanagawa Arts Theatre in Yokohama.
