German premiere of “The Years” by Marco D’Agostin

On December 8-9 at the tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf

Great expectation in Düsseldorf for the German premiere of Marco D’Agostin's most recent and touching work created with the dancer Marta Ciappina, inspired by the novel of the same name by Annie Ernaux: The Years.

‘Someone wrote that there is an insurmountable divide between what once happened and the way it appears to us today, enveloped in a strange unreality. The choreography of The Years is built to attempt to mend this rift’, we read in the presentation.

«In recent years, my works have increasingly taken on a narrative trend, – says D’Agostin – but what are the non-explicit forms that a novel can take in a choreographic environment? The ambition I am pursuing is to find signs and mobility detached from our iconography and reference schemes, but also able to carry the specific weight of a story towards the spectator. I am looking for devices, formats, and dances that take on the weight of biographies, generating broad and popular interpretations».
The stage is entrusted to the mastery of the dancer Marta Ciappina. «Marta has the incredible ability to place and vibrate her secrets in the body: the flexion of one of her hands can evoke the memory of an afternoon in the sun or the death of a father».

The show debuted in Italy in November 2022 and has been one of the highest-rated productions of the season, so much so that it has recently got two Ubu Prize 2023 nominations (the winner will be announced on December 18th): ‘Best Dance Performance’ for The Years and ‘Best Actress’ for Marta Ciappina.

The Years is on stage on December 8 and 9 (8 pm) at the tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf, where the choreographer was a guest for an artistic residency held as part of the NID international residencies programme supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) Directorate General of Performing arts and the Italian Cultural Institute in Cologne. On this occasion, the Institute also collaborates as media partner.
The artists will meet the audience after the performance on December 8th.
