"Moby Dick" by Teatro dei Venti on tour in the Balkan Countries

From August 28 to September 16, the awarded show on stage in Sibiu, Sarajevo, Podgorica, Zagreb, Pula

After two years of forced stop, the ship of Moby Dick by Teatro dei Venti is back on stage for a six-stage tour abroad, in the Balkan Countries: Romania, Bosnia and Erzegovina, Montenegro, and Croatia.

Moby Dick brings Captain Ahab's ship and his obsession with the White Whale to the squares, with a huge theatrical machine and a crew of twenty artists, including actors, musicians, acrobats, and technicians.

Just like in a great shipyard, board after board, lines, ropes and poles, the sailors begin to build a skeletal, unreal ship: it is the Pequod, that, with a meticulous work of theatrical machinery, will become a whale.

Throughout the show there are battles, sudden storms, joyful raids; characters emerge, stories come to surface. The shadow of Ahab and his obscure desire for revenge weighs down on everyone, until the final face-to-face fight with Moby Dick.

Teatro dei Venti continues its many years of artistic research in urban settings with this street performance joining the themes of a classic in world literature which, as writer Cesare Pavese wrote in the introduction to the novel with his translation, is “the allegory of the spasmodic pursuit, of a thirst for knowledge and for revenge, of the relationship between good and evil, of the ferociousness and of the devastating force of nature and of man”.

The artistic project was awarded the 2019 Ubu Prize for stage design, attributed to director Stefano Tè and stage designers Dino Serra and Massimo Zanelli; the Italian Critical Network Award for organisation and planning; and the Last Seen 2019, Show of the Year for Krapp's Last Post magazine.

On August 28 and 29, Moby Dick will be in Sibiu, as a guest of the FITS - Sibiu International Theatre Festival, one of the most important international theatre festivals (in The Big Square, respectively at 08:45 pm and 8.15 pm). In the frame of the Festival, the company will take part in the 'Sibiu Performig Arts Market', a showcase and opportunity for exchange with professionals and artists from all over the world.

On September 4, it will be in Sarajevo (in Susan Sontag Square, at 06:00 pm) for the MESS International Theater Festival, one of the longest-running Balkan festivals, now in its 61st edition.

On September 8, the play will land in Podgorica, for FIAT - International Festival of Alternative Theatre (time and place to be defined).

On September 12, it will be in Zagreb (in Republic of Croatia Square, in front of the Croatian National Theatre, at 9 pm), while the second Croatian stage will be in Pula, for the PUF International Theatre Festival, on September 16 (at 7.30 pm, place to be defined).

Teatro dei Venti’s tour is supported by Emilia-Romagna Region in collaboration with ATER Fondazione and the Italian Cultural Institute in Zagreb.
