Romania - "Work in progress" by Gianina Carbunariu
For four months, the Romanian based director and playwright Gianina Cărbunariu guided a cast of sixteen young artists coming from different regions of Italy and aged between 23 and 35 years in an advanced training course organized by ERT and co-funded by the European Social Fund.
In the first phase, they had been involved in an intense effort of documentation on the theme of the working conditions offered to the new generations of workers. The more than a hundred interviews that formed the basis of the fictional script were carried out in the city of Modena and the surrounding area, but the themes of the play can be recognized throughout today’s Europe.
Through the characters inspired by reality -young people with various occupations, who may travel in any European city-, the play fictionalizes with irony and self-irony situations in various working environments and tries to raise questions about the meaning of the concept of work and, implicitly, the rights of workers in Europe.
The show debuted in Modena, at the Teatro delle Passioni, in May 2018 and on September 27th is staged at the Piatra Neamț Theatre Festival, this year at the 30th edition. The festival is organized by the Theatre of Youth of Piatra Neamț, directed by Gianina Cărbunariu, who is also curator of the Festival.
On September 28th Work in Progress moves to Iași, where it will be the opening performance of the International Theatre Festival “pentru Publicul Tânar” (for young people).
