Poland – Figaro as the prototype of a successful person

“The Barber of Seville” by Artemis Danza on stage at the Great Theatre—National Opera of Warsaw on December 12th

On the 150th anniversary of the death of Gioachino Rossini, Artemis Danza stages one of the most famous work by the master from Pesaro, The Barber of Seville, a well-structured project developing around the very well-known figure of Figaro.

A show that Monica Casadei defines as an «action ballet» and that, on the occasion, involves the painter from Pesaro Giuliano Del Sorbo for the scenes, the visual artists Daniela Usai for the costumes, the composer Luca Vianini for the music.

But who is Figaro, actually? Is there anything hiding behind the loveliness and the smart kindness that may portray him? What would happen to him, if he lived nowadays?
According to Monica Casadei’s interpretation, Figaro is the prototype of a successful person in today’s world. Clad in rigorous managerial clothes, this Rossinian hero becomes the emblem of all those who are able to satisfy with strength, vivacity and savoir faire the expectations of a society that requires a daily achievement of personal goals by optimizing time and energy. So, Figaro may be represented as ‘the problem solver’.

On the choreographic level, Figaro’s character duplicates in the bodies of the entire company, and the performers, without distinction of gender, act with the determination, energy and precision of a 'special team', and with great technical virtuosity.

Thanks to the collaboration and support by the Italian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, the show is on stage in the prestigious Teatr Wielki—Opera Narodowa (Great Theatre—National Opera), also home of the Polish National Ballet, one of the largest theatres in Europe, which was inaugurated in 1833 just with a production of Rossini's The Barber of Seville.
